Book Synopsis

In this mesmerizing debut, a competition between two magicians becomes a star-crossed love story.

The circus arrives at night, without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within nocturnal black and white striped tents awaits a unique experience, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stand awestruck as a tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and gaze in wonderment at an illusionist performing impossible feats of magic.

Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is underway – a contest between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in “a game,” in which each must use their powers of illusion to best the other. Unbeknownst to them, this game is a duel to the death, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

My Experience

Guys, I want everyone to know, I tried so hard to really love this book. I did. But at the end I  really am over it and think it is truly over hyped. Now this isn’t gonna be a review that completely smashes the book because there were some aspects I did like.

The writing style I did enjoy, and the narration I thought was perfect. The problem is the pace of this book. I went into knowing that it wasn’t an action type book but the plot it’s self I found took the first 300 pages to really come together. Not to mention there was new characters being introduced and you didn’t why until 300 pages in also. And for me that is just to long. With that being said this book was very atmospheric which is why I think it takes forever to really get going. Don’t get me wrong I love atmosphere but I think maybe this book has a little to much in it for my taste.

The romance in this book I did really love. I didn’t get attached to any of the characters but I did really love their stories. Not even in just the romance but their life background I thought was really well done.

The circus itself I also liked. I thought the atmosphere around that was done amazingly. I did enjoy the overall concept of this book and I have recommended it to my friends who I know love a good romance, atmosphere, slow going book, but if you have a book taste like mine I would wait until you are more into that type of book.

I can for sure see why this book is so loved and so hyped up, but for a reader like me it just wasn’t something I think I’ll be re reading or caring enough to keep my copy. I gave this book 3 stars for the three thins I liked, the circus, the romance, and the design elements to this book.

Buddy Read Questions

 Jasmine’s Questions

My answers will be in bold. Jasmine’s will be in italic

  1. How do you feel about the ending?

I personally did not like the ending. I thought it was a little anti-climatic and left a lot of lose ends.

I feel unsatisfied.  Why Bailey and what makes him unique? What is Widgets intention with the man in the grey suit?  I feel like the ending is left open for a book 2. I wish there was an epilogue to tell a story about the circus 5 years later or something.

2.  Do you know anything about this book before you decided to read it?

I knew it was a very well loved book. Everyone I follow always seems to rave about it. I had seen lots of positive reviews and knew the basic info of what it was about.

I have seen reviews of this book by other bloggers and the ratings were good. I also love the cover too.

3. Who is your favourite character?

My favourite character was Poppet. I really don’t know why I just felt the most drawn to her. And this book really had no characters I was completely crazy for. I wasn’t to attached to any of them but I enjoyed Poppets parts the most I think.

I like Celia. Her magic show is awesome. Even when she was 5 and the magic she does with the tea cup. I was drawn immediate to her and curious to find our more about her. I also like that she lobed to read a lot of books and her room is filled up with book everywhere. We can all relate to that.

My Questions

Again my answers will be in bold and Jasmine’s in italic.

  1. If you were apart of the circus what would your part be?

I would love to be part of the design team. The circus is black and white only and I love working with black and white. The tattoos I’m always most excited to do are in black and white. And I did love the imagery of the circus. Maybe I’ll have to do a “Tattoo Inspired”, hmmm….

I want to be the fortune teller. I don’t have any skills in that area but I thought that would be neat to see other people’s future.

2. What would be something you would change about the book id anything?

I would change the pace and the ending. No doubt.

I would change the ending. Add an epilogue to tell what each character is up to 2-5 years later.

3. Did this book meet to expectations you had ?

Not even close.

No. I was expecting a really good read because I see many 5 stars ratings.

Well there is my first buddy read review ! Thank you so much Jasmine for approaching me for this buddy read I loved talking to you about the book even though we both were a little let down. I hope to buddy read again soon !
